Indicative only. Calculations follow National Credit Act (NCA) caps for short-term credit: interest max 5% per month, initiation fee max R165 + 10% of amount above R1,000 (capped at R1,050), monthly service fee max R69. All fees attract 15% VAT. Actual lender quotes may differ.
What is a micro-loan in South Africa?
A micro-loan is a small, short-term loan of R8,000 or less, repaid within six months. Under Section 105 of the National Credit Act (NCA), this product is formally classified as "short-term credit" and regulated by the National Credit Regulator (NCR).
Micro-loans are typically used for emergencies — a broken geyser, a medical bill, getting through to payday — rather than long-term financing. Funds are usually paid out within 24 to 48 hours.
How the calculator works
Enter your loan amount, repayment term in months, and the interest rate. The calculator returns:
- Your monthly instalment (capital, interest, service fee, and optional credit life)
- Your total cost of credit (everything you pay above the loan amount)
- A full breakdown showing where each rand goes
Fees auto-populate at the NCA legal maximums, but you can lower them if your lender charges less.
What the NCA actually caps
The cost of a registered micro-loan in South Africa is made up of three legal components, each with its own ceiling:
Interest rate: 5% per month for a first loan in a calendar year. A second short-term loan in the same year drops to 3% per month.
Initiation fee: R165 + 10% of the loan amount above R1,000, capped at R1,050 (excluding VAT). This is once-off.
Monthly service fee: R69 (excluding VAT) per month.
All fees attract 15% VAT on top. The calculator applies VAT automatically.
A worked example
Borrow R5,000 over 3 months at 5% interest per month, financing the initiation fee:
- Initiation fee (incl. VAT): R655,50
- Monthly service fee (incl. VAT): R79,35 × 3 = R238,05
- Interest over 3 months: roughly R475
- Monthly instalment: around R2,025
- Total cost of credit: roughly R1,075 on a R5,000 loan
That's a 21% cost of credit over three months — which is why micro-loans should be an emergency tool, not a budgeting tool.
Should you finance the initiation fee?
Two options when you take a micro-loan:
Pay it upfront. Lower monthly instalments, but you receive less cash than the loan amount on day one.
Finance it. You get the full loan amount, but you pay interest on the fee for the full term. Slightly more expensive overall.
The calculator lets you toggle between both so you can see the real difference before signing.
Credit life insurance: optional, but check before you tick
Credit life cover pays your loan if you die, become disabled, or lose your job. It is capped at R4,50 per R1,000 of deferred amount per month for short-term credit.
You are not legally required to take the lender's policy. You can cede an existing life policy you already own — which is usually cheaper. Always ask.
How to use micro-loans without getting trapped
Three rules that save people from spiralling debt:
Borrow only what you can repay from one or two paycheques. If the instalment is more than 30% of your take-home pay, the loan is too big.
Never roll one micro-loan into another. Taking a new loan to pay off the old one is the fastest way into the debt trap.
Only use NCR-registered lenders. Verify registration at ncr.org.za. Unregistered lenders ("mashonisas") have no legal standing — but they also have no rules.
Frequently asked questions
What's the maximum I can borrow with a micro-loan? R8,000, repayable within six months. Anything bigger or longer falls under unsecured credit, which has different (lower) interest caps.
Is 5% per month the same as 60% per year? Mathematically, 5% × 12 = 60% simple annual interest. But because micro-loans are short-term, you don't actually compound at that rate for a full year unless you keep re-borrowing.
Can I get a micro-loan if I'm blacklisted? Registered NCR lenders must do an affordability assessment by law. If you're over-indebted, they're required to decline. Anyone offering credit without checks is likely lending recklessly or operating illegally.
How fast will I get the money? Most online micro-lenders pay out within 24 to 48 hours of approval, often same-day for morning applications.
What happens if I miss a payment? You'll be charged default interest, your credit score will drop, and the debt will be reported to the credit bureaus. Contact your lender before missing a payment — most will negotiate.
