How Much Can You Afford to Borrow?
Before applying for a personal loan in South Africa, the question that matters most isn't whether the bank will approve you — it's whether the monthly repayment will fit your budget without leaving you stretched. This calculator gives you a clear answer in seconds, using the same inputs an NCR-registered lender would assess.
Enter your loan amount, term, and interest rate, plus your income and monthly expenses. The tool calculates your estimated repayment (including the NCA-regulated initiation and admin fees), the total cost of credit, and a colour-coded verdict on affordability.
How Personal Loan Affordability Works in South Africa
Under the National Credit Act, every registered lender must conduct an affordability assessment before approving a loan. They check your gross and net income, statutory deductions, minimum living expenses, and existing debt repayments. What's left is your discretionary income — and the new loan must fit comfortably within it.
A useful benchmark: your total monthly debt repayments should ideally stay below 36% of your gross income. Above that, lenders get nervous and your own cash flow gets tight.
What the Loan Actually Costs
A personal loan isn't just an interest rate. The full cost includes:
- Interest — capped by the NCA at roughly 24.85% per annum on unsecured credit (repo rate × 2.2 + 20%)
- Initiation fee — once-off, capped at R1,207.50 plus VAT, usually capitalised into the loan
- Monthly admin fee — capped at R69 plus VAT
- Credit life insurance — typically required by the lender, around R4.50 per R1,000 of balance per month
Always compare loans on total cost of credit, not just the monthly instalment. A longer term lowers the monthly payment but adds significant interest over time.
Reading Your Result
- Green (likely affordable): Repayment is comfortably below 30% of income with a healthy buffer.
- Amber (tight but possible): It fits, but one unexpected expense could tip you into trouble.
- Red (not affordable): Repayment exceeds your disposable income — a registered lender would decline this under NCA reckless lending rules.
